Hood River and Mount Hood

On Thursday Pat and I drove from Portland back to Hood River where we parked our car and went for a bike ride. We headed east and followed the Columbia Gorge to Roweena Overlook (the picture looking over my shoulder). Our route took us through a long state park that had two long tunnels (the Mosier tunnels) and a wonderfully smooth blacktop road. This was an out-and-back ride and as always it had lots of elevation change.

While we were at Roweena overlook, we watched a barge heading west on the Columbia river, and decided to race it back to Hood River. For much of the return trip we were neck-and-neck, but the road back through the park was pretty fast after the climb and we won by a reasonable margin.

After a wonderful lunch we headed south for Mount Hood to see Timberline Lodge, made famous in the movie "the shining" staring Jack Nicholson. All the exterior shots in the movie were of Timberline Lodge, the interior shots in the movie were done on a sound stage and look nothing like the interior of the real lodge. The real lodge is constructed from massive rough hewn timbers and is very rustic. The center fireplace is a three stories tall hexagonal shape, and the huge vertical timbers are also hexagonal. Pat is standing in front of one of the timbers in the pictures. Still lots of snow up there as you can see. Mount Hood's summit was covered in clouds the entire time except for a two minute window when Pat snapped the pictures.

Then we went down the mountain and back to Portland.
