11.5 Mile Hike in Prairie Creek State Park - Fern Valley and the Pacific

We decided to try a big hike; wondering how 11 year old Gracie would do.  Well, let me tell you, she kicked her Aunt Pat's you know what!  The first 7.5 miles were challenging, quite a bit of terraine.  It was the longer part of our loop hike and the culmination was this area called Fern Valley.  There is a picture here of the girls in front of the wall of ferns.  We thought by the name of the hike that we'd be in this flat prarie of fern's.  We did not expect to cross a stream and climb over logs to get to the Pacific Ocean where we say a few wild Elk grazing.  Randy will post pictures of the Elk with his good camera when he gets a chance.  My iPhone didn't do justice to the Pacific and the Elk.

The hike took longer than we thought and so as not to worry Gracie and Caileigh's parents we decided to pick up the pace on the way back.  The girls eventually took Uncle Randy on the last 8 tenths of a mile and went running to the end.  Aunt Pat finally ermerged from the woods 5 minutes after the 3 of them.  11.5 miles is hard on my hips, I wish I didn't have to admit it but I do.
